Do I need a background in math or science to become a pilot?

While basic mental arithmetic, high school mathematics, and general science concepts help during theoretical ground school modules (such as Navigation, Meteorology, and Aircraft Technical Fundamentals), our instructors guide you step-by-step through all required syllabus concepts.

How do I obtain an Aviation Medical Certificate?

You must undergo a physical examination with a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) accredited by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The exam evaluates vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and general physical fitness. We recommend completing your medical exam before purchasing your initial training materials.

What is the difference between a PPL and a CPL?

  • Private Pilot License (PPL): Allows you to act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of an aircraft for private, non-commercial purposes. You can fly yourself, family, and friends, but you cannot fly for reward or hire.

  • Commercial Pilot License (CPL): Qualifies you to fly professionally for compensation (e.g., charter flights, regional airlines, cargo operations, or corporate aviation). A CPL requires a minimum of 200 total flight hours alongside advanced ground school examinations.

How long does it take to complete a Private Pilot License (PPL)?

How much does flight training cost, and do I have to pay upfront?

Flight training costs depend on the license pathway and the exact number of flight hours you require to reach proficiency. Rather than demanding a lump sum upfront, training is billed on a pay-as-you-fly structure or via incremental account top-ups. This ensures you only pay for actual airtime and instruction received.

Are there extra costs beyond the flight hourly rate?

Your overall budget should account for:

  • SACAA official registration and examination fees

  • Aviation medical examiner fees

  • Student Pilot License (SPL) processing fees

  • Flight equipment (headset, logbook, charts, fuel tester, plotters)
